Fringe 2009
The 63rd Edinburgh Festival Fringe took place from 7 to 31 August 2009, and once again broke records to secure the Fringe's top spot as the largest arts festival on Earth.
At a glance
Fringe 2009 featured 34,265 performances of over 2,200 shows in 256 different venues.
An estimated 18,901 performers took to the stage, compared to 18,792 performers in 2008 and 18,626 in 2007. A whopping total of 1,859,235 tickets were sold - a 21% increase on last year’s figure and 9% more than the previous record set in 2007.
37% (838) of shows had their world premiere performances at Fringe 2009.
465 shows at this year's festival were absolutely free, 115 more than in 2008.
The 2009 Programme was a broad mix of shows, including comedy (35%), theatre (28%), music (16%), musicals and operas (5%), dance and physical theatre (5%), children's shows (4%), events (4%), and exhibitions (3%).
