The Allen Wright Award was established twenty years ago to encourage and reward quality writing in arts journalism. The award was created by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society in 1998 as a tribute to Allen Wright, the Arts Editor of The Scotsman from 1964 to 1993.

Allen Wright was a passionate supporter of the Fringe and a great believer in fostering young talent. The Scotsman Fringe First Awards, which were established by Allen in 1973, are to this day a major institution at the Fringe.

In 2018 the Allen Wright Award will include a reviews category and a features category, with awards for the 1st and 2nd placed entrants in each.
