What is Fringe Player?
We developed our own platform, Fringe Player, which was available to any 2021 Fringe show or venue that wants to use it for pre-recorded performances, as part of the show registration fee. Fringe Player integrates smoothly with our ticketing site, which means audiences buying tickets to your show can access it easily.
Using Fringe Player means you don’t have to pay any additional costs associated with using a third-party platform.
The Fringe Player is an on demand platform, this means your ticket buyers will have until the end of the festival to watch your show. Content on the Fringe Player can be viewed from the first day of the festival, however, you can sell tickets before then.
We are working to ensure that all shows uploaded to Fringe Player can be subtitled / captioned to make them more accessible. After your video has been uploaded, we will get in touch about your options for captioning.
How does Fringe Player protect my content?
Fringe Player includes several layers of security to protect artist content. Encryption protects your video content from upload to playback by securing the video data.
Your video content is only made available to a ticket buyer once they’ve been verified; Fringe Player checks that the user is logged in and has purchased a valid ticket for your event.
When an audience member with a valid ticket logs in to watch a show on Fringe Player, the player makes a real-time request to obtain permission to play the video; this prevents any attempt to share or distribute unfairly.
How will my event display?
Fringe Player will transcode your single video into several files, each best suited for the typical range of your viewers’ bandwidth and resolution. Show information will appear alongside your video and any content warnings you have provided during show registration will appear overlaid on top of the video file. For shows with an age rating of 18+, users will need to click a button before the video will play to acknowledge they’ve read the warning. If you have a venue, your venue’s branding will display alongside your event.
If you’ve provided a donation link at the point of registration, a button will appear below your video signposting audiences to make a donation.
Uploading to the Fringe Player
We are working with established video platform Brightcove, which will provide the technology to deliver a seamless video hosting experience upon which Fringe Player is built.
Fringe Player accepts most formats, if you are unsure some commonly used formats are MP4, M4V or MOV.
We'll do our best to accommodate most file sizes and formats. To help with the upload process we'd recommend that files should be maximum 10GB - this will allow for a smooth upload while still being able to deliver high-quality video to your audience. If you're file is larger than 10GB and you're unable to compress it further, please get in touch [email protected].
Frame rate is usually between 15 - 60 frames per second.
Max resolution 1080p (Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels). To give the best viewing experience to audiences, your single video will be transcoded into several files, each best suited for the typical range of your viewers’ bandwidth and resolution.
Your video aspect ratio will be preserved. An aspect ratio of 16:9 is common.
Audio source files can be in MP3, M4A, or WAV format.
