Nicolas Roeg's haunting, nightmarish and lyrical 1980 puzzle film details the toxic relationship between a neurotic psychologist (Garfunkel) and a volatile young woman (Russell), set against the backdrop of modern Vienna. Told in a non-linear style, this is troubling, confrontational cinema of the highest order. The film will be introduced by legendary British film producer Jeremy Thomas, who collaborated with director Nicolas Roeg over this film and more. Classified: 18+

17-year-old Christy has been kicked out of his latest foster home in Cork and finds himself living with his half-brother Shane. As the past catches up with him, Christy must decide which path will serve him best in this beautifully drawn and warmly funny portrait of young people, community and resilience in the face of hardship. EIFF: Red Road (2006)

EIFF honours the life and legacy of producer Paddy Higson, who passed away earlier this year, with this 35th anniversary screening of a searing underground Scottish classic. In David Hayman’s bruising, intense and beautifully acted prison drama, a murderer unravels through flashbacks to his youth which expose the history of trauma that set him on the path to violence. The film won the inaugural Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature at the 1990 Edinburgh International Film Festival. Classified: 15+.

EIFF: Silent Scream (1990)

Whether discussing his writing process, experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs or mixing music in his life as a DJ, acclaimed Scottish author and outsider icon Irvine Welsh remains a figure of fascination, and in this striking new film, director Paul Sng (Tish, Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché) pays fittingly eclectic homage with an approach that is richly detailed, playful and complex. EIFF: Reality Is Not Enough

EIFF welcomes legendary film editor Thelma Schoonmaker in person to introduce her late husband Michael Powell's classic 1937 film presented in a digital restoration. Set on an isolated Scottish island, Powell's beautifully filmed and stirring film dramatises the shifts in play in a remote community as older generations struggle to retain their culture as younger islanders look to leave in search of more modern lifestyles.
