World-famous Russian playwright Anton Chekhov is best known for his major works including: Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Seagull. However before writing these, he was responsible for highly-acclaimed short comedies called vaudevilles. These explored the human condition including the beauty, heartbreak and loneliness people experience. On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco embodies all of these themes. Ivan Ivanovich Nyukhin is told by his wife to deliver a lecture on the dangers of smoking to one's health but digresses somewhat and begins laying bare his unhappiness and his failed dreams. A short comic masterpiece.
