Mills & Farrell are noted for their rootsy minimalist approach. Using two voices and acoustic instrumentation, inspired by Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, The Milk Carton Kids and the Waifs, the duo have a timeless sound characterized by intricately woven acoustic guitars and tight harmonies. Coming from backgrounds of Australian rock (David Farrell) and Nova Scotia folk (Janet Mills), geographic improbability yields an undefinable element to their modern and traditional offerings.
