Hard by Waverley Station, Old Saint Paul’s is home to Edinburgh’s oldest Episcopal congregation. The astonishing War Memorial was completed in 1926 and comprises a broad stone stair that rises to an almost life-size sculpted Calvary of grave beauty, and – over the stair – a chapel. Mark Gibson, author of a history of Old St Paul’s, conducts a tour of the building that inspired Alison Watt’s masterpiece Still, which hangs above the chapel’s stone altar. Exploring Sacred Space is organised in conjunction with the National Churches Trust.
