The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is renowned as one of the greatest celebrations of arts and culture on the planet.
It speaks to the values of being open, welcoming, inclusive, pioneering, international, experimental and innovative. It is an important part of Scotland’s cultural heritage, and a vital access point to the arts for so many.
In 2020, the pandemic brought a halt to the Fringe for the first time in 73 years. Thousands of artists and operators lost their livelihoods, while local creatives, businesses, employers and more were all badly hurt. In a normal year, the Fringe generates £173m a year to our economy. But in 2020 and 2021, the losses across the cultural sector – and the city as a whole - have been enormous.The Fringe Society is the registered charity which supports all aspects of the festival. It is the convening body of the Fringe: supporting everyone who makes it happen, from artists to audiences. The pandemic also interrupted the important work the Society does with artists, communities and schools to engage new audiences and inspire participation in the arts.
It prevented us from supporting the brilliant creatives who make the Edinburgh Fringe what it is, and we fear that without support, those who have been unable to create, make, showcase and support work will struggle to return.
Support the Fringe is about aiding the festival’s much-needed recovery. We want to build the Fringe back as the best version of itself, and we need your help to do so.
