We are so thankful for our US supporters and for the longstanding relationships we have with US theatre and production companies.

From the 1960s, when former US Airforce member Jim Haynes founded the Traverse Theatre, up to the modern day, when Six the musical was first presented at the Fringe before making its way to Broadway, the Edinburgh Fringe has built a deep and meaningful relationship with the US over many, many years.

US activity

In April 2023, a small group of Fringe Society representatives – led by our Chief Executive, Shona McCarthy – visited New York City and Washington DC to forge and strengthen relationships with Fringe fans in the US.

The visit coincided with Tartan Week; in addition to participating in the incredible Tartan Day Parade, our team also met with individuals and organisations including Playbill, the UK Consul in New York, the British Embassy in Washington DC, the White House Historical Society and the American-Scottish Foundation.

The trip was a fantastic success, with many new friendships struck up and promising plans made for the future of the Fringe. We'd like to thank everyone we met for the warm welcome we received, and we're eager to get over to see you again.
