Board of Directors

The Board can consist of up to 17 Directors, 12 of whom are directly elected by the membership, one appointed as the Chair of the Board and the remainder can be appointed by the elected Directors.

Under the constitution, there are three categories in which you can stand for election to the Board of Directors:

• Participants – anyone involved in bringing an Edinburgh Festival Fringe show which is registered that year.
• Venues – anyone representing any venue registered in that year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe – you must have confirmation from the venue that you are representing them.
• Open – this includes any person interested in standing. Any venue representative or performer may stand in the Open category, but is only permitted to stand in one category at a time.

You need to be a member of the Fringe Society to stand for election to the Board of Directors. You also need to be nominated and seconded by two other members of the Society. Once you’re a member, you can access the Members' area of the website, where you can download and complete a nomination form. Details of any upcoming elections will be available online.

As a member of the Society, you have the opportunity to shape the largest arts festival in the world by voting for Directors. As a Director, you’re directly involved in overseeing the future of this amazing festival, as well as providing governance and guidance to the Chief Executive and the Society staff as they work towards the core principals of open access and the Fringe Society mission statement.

There are at least five Board meetings a year, in Edinburgh. You may also be involved in committees and working groups of the Board that meet on a regular basis. These tend to be in Edinburgh but are occasionally elsewhere in the UK (depending on location of Directors). We also encourage all those considering standing for election to the Board to read the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator’s (OSCR’s) duties.

As a Director of a registered charity there is no remuneration for being on the Board. However, the Fringe Society pays reasonable travel expenses and accommodation for attending meetings. If you wish, you may donate these expenses back to the charity.
