The Fringe Society is looking for proposals from Fringe solo artists to run creative digital projects linking Fringe participants with Edinburgh community groups, with the aim of helping more locals to engage with the festival and encouraging the next generation of Fringe performers and audiences.

This call-out is open to any solo artist who has previously brought a show to the Fringe or registered in 2020. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2020 at 12:00 noon (GMT+1).

What we're looking for

We’re looking for different digital projects that make the Fringe and performing arts more exciting and accessible to Edinburgh communities. We’re planning to support three different artists and their individual projects. 

For example, you could do a digital performance on Zoom and a meet the audience in a Q&A after. Your digital show might be interactive. You could run workshops sharing creative skills with the group. Or, you might have a completely different idea in mind. Tell us about it! 

Selected artists will then develop their ideas in conversation with a community group and a mentor experienced in digital delivery – please bear in mind your project may adapt and change during this process. You must be able to deliver your project without physically meeting the community group.
 A panel of community representatives will assess your submission on the following criteria:

• the benefit to both the community group and your development as an artist.
• deliverability of the project concept digitally and within the timeframe.
• your willingness and capacity to collaborate with a community group and mentor.
• variety – we’ll be looking to support as wide a range of different projects and art forms as possible.

We will notify successful artists by 07 October 2020.

Benefits for selected artists

If successful, you’ll become part of a small team of fellow artists and will be mentored by a lead artist whose experience in participatory and digital practice will help bring your project to life. 

You’ll receive a mix of individual and group mentoring with the lead artist and take part in skill-sharing sessions within the artist group. You’ll also be paired with a community group with whom you’ll develop and deliver your digital project.

You’ll receive a flat fee of £600 to deliver your project. 

The artist fee is £600. This will cover the planning and delivery of up to three community-facing sessions, as well as supporting attendance at up to four mentoring and skill-sharing sessions.

We expect the length and number of community-facing sessions will vary depending on the individual artist's style of delivery – we will agree a number of sessions in advance.

We can cover additional costs to meet any access requirements or help reduce barriers to participation – for example, the cost of hiring a BSL interpreter to work with an artist or community group that uses sign language. We will work with the successful artist and the community group to work out what may be needed.
