About the location
The street events take place on the High Street and the Mound Precinct.
The High Street has level access throughout, with a mixture of cobblestones and flagstones. There are some curbs but most of the street is level between pavement and road. The cobbles on the Royal Mile are relatively even in most places. The High Street has a gentle slope from west to east.
The Mound is level throughout with a flagstone surface.
Getting here
Public transport
For those with limited mobility traveling to the High Street by bus, we recommend buses that stop at George IV Bridge, as the ground is fairly level from the stop into the event area. Buses that stop on George IV Bridge include Lothian Buses number 23 and 27.
There are also close-by stops on South Bridge; Lothian Buses number 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 14, 29, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 45 and 49. If you are traveling to the Mound by bus, you can catch any bus that goes to Princes Street and get off near the National Gallery of Scotland.
Accessible viewing areas
On our larger performance area at West Parliament Square, we have specific areas for those who need to be at the front of the audience to see. Look out for the ‘Priority Viewing’ signs. Please ask a member of staff if you would like some help getting to the front of the crowd in any area.
Quiet areas
The street events spaces can get very busy. If you need to escape the hustle and bustle, there are some peaceful areas right in the middle of both event areas. On the High Street, head around the back of St Giles Cathedral to Parliament Square. On the Mound you can escape to both Princes Street Gardens and the National Gallery of Scotland (free entry).
Staff
The street events team will be positioned throughout the event areas and will be wearing bright red tops. All our staff have access training and will be more than happy to help with enquiries .
Toilets
There are no toilets provided on site. The nearest accessible toilets can be found at the City Chambers or the Council Advice Shop. The accessible toilet in the City Chambers is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The Advice Shop is open Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 13:00 (10:00 – 13:00 on Tuesdays). Ask Street Events staff if you need directions.
BSL interpretation
BSL-interpreted street performer shows will take place at West Parliament Square (outside St Giles’ Cathedral) on 09, 14 and 20 August. Priority viewing areas will be available close to the interpreters.
