The first round of Scotsman Fringe Firsts have been awarded to eight companies in the 40th year of the awards. The Scotsman Fringe First award is dedicated to recognising outstanding new writing premiering at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe; this year the numbers exceed 800 productions.

This year's first winners are Quietly (Traverse), Fionnuala (Hill Street Theatre), Grounded (Traverse), Feral (Summerhall), Kiss me honey, honey! (Gilded Balloon), Ciara (Traverse), The Events (Traverse) and Nirbhaya (Assembly).

The next set of Scotsman Fringe First Awards will be announced on Friday 15 August.

Herald Angel Award Winners

The Herald Angel Awards have also announced their first week’s winners.

The award, which has been running since 1995, is awarded to the best of the festivals' performers, venues and backstage crew. In outstanding cases, the panel may award an "Archangel" - the highest honour presented at the ceremony, while "Little Devils" are awarded to those who have overcome adversity, or in the true tradition of the festival, have demonstrated a 'show must go on' attitude.

This year’s first-week winners are all Angels: Ciara (Traverse), Nirbhaya (Assembly), Sandpits Avenue (Zoo Southside), One step before the fall (Zoo) and Sean Hughes - Penguins (Gilded Balloon).

The next round of Herald Angel Awards will be announced on Saturday 16 August.
